Richard Herringâs Objective (Radio 4, Thursday), a smart and occasionally surprising new series in which the eponymous stand-up attempts to redeem objects that people have come to hate, began with the unenviable task of reclaiming the toothbrush moustache from Hitler in the name of Charlie Chaplin. Herring wore one of these moustaches for the best part of 18 months in preparation for the show, which, as he said, is âa big commitment to make what is essentially quite a glib pointâ; but the glibness receded in the final 10 minutes, replaced by a rousing call to arms against the BNP, with an impassioned Herring arguing that âif you laugh at fascism, you destroy it.â This weekâs target is the hoodie; and Iâll be curious to see what kind of political grenades Herring finds up its sleeves.
