The kids went for a sleepover at their grandparents, so that we could drive into London and have a barbecue with a handful of friends. It was pretty cold outside, but wow, what a treat to be allowed to meet people. It felt like an awful long time since I'd been into the city (though it's only around three months since I did those Clapham Grand gigs) and everything felt weird and alien. I guess it's been a double lockdown for me as I've had to spend so much time in bed/taking it easy, but it's seemed much longer and harder than the first one. Please God, don't make us do this again. I'll believe in you and everything (if you can contact me and let me know which version of you is the correct one).
The time flew by filled with gossip, sick jokes and everyone (apart from me) getting steadily more drunk. It was a party with only five or six people there, but that suits me. I am often overwhelmed by social situations, but we chat freely and everyone could be heard and everyone was cool. I think being thrown into a packed social situation after so many months of splendid and not so splendid isolation would have been too much of an overload, so this was perfect.
We got home after 10pm and I was pretty tired from the drive (but I think regular tired, rather than post-chemo tired). I had a moment of shock when I got up to go to the loo when I saw that my son's safety gate was wide open. Had we failed to shut it? Had someone snuck in and spirited him away? Then I remembered that he was at his grandparents. Phew.
