I hate it when computers go wrong. It is doubly annoying that it is my laptop which has gone tits up as it not only has all my emails and contacts on it, but also scripts and most importantly the powerpoint presentation for my Hercules show. A lot of this stuff is at least partially backed up, but we've always had trouble doing this with the videos from the show which have only really worked on this laptop.
So today, in between signing all the programmes for those kind souls who donated and stuffing them in envelopes, I have been attempting a rescue mission on the stuff hidden in the computer's recesses.
It's been frustrating, but partially successful, as sometimes the computer would give me a few minutes of grace where it decided it wasn't broken, before then remembering that it was and packing in again. I managed to salvage most of my files (it was a bit like being in the Poseidon Adventure II), but the parachute jump clip was too big to fit on my memory stick so that remains unrescued. Also annoyingly although my itunes seemed to let me export my library, it doesn't appear to want me to import it on my desk top. If anyone knows what I have done wrong then do let me know, because I don't fancy another week of reloading all the CDs on, and of course I will lose the stuff I have bought on line.
So hopefully we will be able to cobble the presentation together for Abergavenny on Saturday, but I suspect that there will be at least a few glitches.
Much as I annoyed by all of this, there is a part of me that is delighted. It's the second time this laptop had had a hard disc problem and it's now a couple of years old and although all logic dictates that I should probably get it fixed, there is a persuasive argument to say that I should cut my losses and buy a new machine. A slightly smaller and more robust one, with even more functions that I will never even discover, let alone use. And though most of me is annoyed by thje inconvenience and the expense, a part of me is dancing for joy at the excuse to buy a new toy. A new toy that I will undoubtedly break or lose before too long, which will mean I will have to buy an ever newer toy. And so it goes on.
No wonder the world is in such a mess. Hopefully we'll have discovered a new planet we can live on by the time all the resources on this one have run out.
