It was Me2's turn to do the park run this week - his turn having been delayed by food poisoning last week. Some people might argue that he missed his chance and that it was Me1's turn again, but Me1 was gracious enough to give him the benefit of the doubt. He had 29 mins 37 seconds to beat and was determined to wipe the smug smile of Me1's face.
Given the race started at 9am it was surprisingly hot. The sun was blazing down and after kicking off at quite a pace Me2 was regretting wearing his hoodie. And with about 2km to go he decided to take it off and carry it. My car keys and ear pod case were in the pocket and I was mildly worried about them falling out, but held on tight and hoped for the best, whilst imagining having to ring my wife to tell her to pack the kids into the other car and to come and collect me. Time was tight as I had to get home to take Phoebe to her gym lesson. I don't know why I didn't put the stuff in my jogging bottom pockets. But I suppose every second counted.
And it was a tougher last km but Me2 raced home in 27mins and 35 seconds. Leaving Me1 looking like a slow idiot, over 2 minutes behind him. Me1 will get his chance next week. I was 145th this time, so well within the first half and aside from having to queue to have my bar code scanned whilst standing in the sun, I didn't feel too bad.
I checked my hoodie pocket and thankfully my car key was still in there. Less thankfully, my ear pod charging case was not. I had spent all the time since buying these things worrying about losing one of the things you put in your ear, but now I'd lost the case, without which the ear phones become useless.
I walked back round the course but could not find it. Me2's victory was somewhat sullied by this expensive mistake.
But Me2 didn't care. What a victory!
If Me1 wears appropriate clothing next week and there isn't a heat wave then I think he can beat this. I might be hooked on this fun event. Or I might just get frustrated when I can't get any faster and stop doing it. Either way a weekly race against myself, with the added incentive of other people being my pace makers, is not a bad way to push the exercise onwards.
