Friday 16th June 2006

I hired a jeep today and spent the morning driving round the windy (they wind, like a snake, it wasn't windy, like the top of a hill) roads of Tobago. It's a surprisingly untouristy island and I passed through a lot of similar small towns and went by beaches which only locals seemed to be frequenting. Early on a man jumped into the road and gesticulated for me to stop. For a moment I thought he was telling me that the road was closed and turned off, but realised that it wasn't when I saw other cars ignore him, so I turned back. This time he gesticulated at me even more wildly and ran after the jeep as I went by. I wondered what the Hell was going on. He was the most aggressive hitch-hiker I had ever seen. Having just finished "In Cold Blood" I was not about to pick anyone up, even on this seemingly friendly isle. As I drove around for the next few hours several other men did something similar and it was only later I realised that many people get round the island by just flagging down cars and throwing a couple of dollars the driver's way. Even with this info I think I will be unlikely to stop for anyone.
I enjoyed the drive, despite getting lost a couple of times. Saw some fantastic bays and went across the middle of the island, through the rain forest, up a steep road that occasionally turned to rough track.
Towards the end I was unsure of where I was, but came across the Dwight Yorke stadium which isn't too far from my hotel. I thought to myself that this is probably the only stadium in the world named after one of Jordan's lovers. Though I believe there is a Peter Andre squash court in Shrewsbury.
Things going well so far, so not going to waste too much time writing this rubbish. There is sun to sit in (not literally - actually some way beneath the actual sun, but its rays still get to you despite being several light minutes away.
