Thursday 3rd March 2005

I was recording three editions of the new nostalgia quiz, "Back in the Day" for Channel 4 this afternoon. I think it starts in April and it's on in the afternoons. It could be the new Countdown.
The driver who drove me to Teddington where it was being filmed had what I would imagine is the most annoying mobile phone ring tone in the world. It was simply an impatient, shouting voice, not dis-similar to that of Daffy Duck, but then again, still not his voice repeating the words, "Answer the phone. Come on! Answer the phone!"
I couldn't imagine how anyone would choose to put that on their own mobile or how it could continue to be in any way amusing even before it had even been played once, so I presume the driver was being punished by someone in some way, possibly for a crime committed in a previous life. Not only is it a ring tone that quite clearly marks you out as a total dick to everyone else in the world (and a total dick who doesn't even have the money to splash out on the proper Daffy Duck), it would surely drive you insane if you got more than one phone call a month.
Which he obviously did as within minutes his phone went off again. Though this time there was a different ring. It was confusingly a woman saying "Hello? Hello? Are you there? Hello?" So he had some kind of random generator (or a different voice for different callers), but apparently all of the rings were equally annoying. I know he didn't just have his phone on speaker-phone because the phone rang again and it was the woman's voice again, saying exactly the same thing.
I was not impressed by the selection of random rings on this phone and decided that had I been this man I would probably have killed myself. Or maybe, less dramatically thought better of my choice of ring tone.
