The Leicester Square Theatre doesn’t have room to store our RHLSTP chairs, so at the end of each run they have to be delivered back to my house. To be honest it’s where most of your badge money goes.
Our address often catches out delivery drivers who use sat navs. I am not quite sure why this should be in the age of postcodes, but sometimes they go to the next village across and sometimes they end up in Hitchin, which we are relatively close to. Today’s driver rang me to tell me he was at Nat West Bank and I told him he was in the wrong town and though he must have had the address, I had to text it to him. I told him to use the post code.
A little while later he rang me to tell me he was outside some kind of bar and couldn’t find our house. Postcodes are shared of course and the pub is at the centre of our postcode and we’re some way up the road from it. But I had given him our house number so I couldn’t really understand the confusion. I suggested he looked at the house numbers and told him what direction he should be going and a landmark to look out for, but isn’t it a bit weird that someone whose job it is to deliver things somewhere is so clueless about how to find an address. And this is by no means an isolated incident. I’ve had to stand outside my house to guide cabs and delivery men to the right place so many times.
Perhaps we have just become too reliant on sat navs to nanny us to our destination, but I use sat navs and am aware that they often don’t get you to the exact door of where you’re heading and that you need to use your common sense a bit.  Or at least understand how house numbers work.
But I guess technology makes us stupid. And I speak as someone who could never really navigate from maps and for whom sat navs made driving to places much more possible and incident free. But come on dude, your job is to deliver things. Learn about numbers. Or give us a discount if we have to help you do your job!
Anyway the chairs finally made it home for another Christmas.
