An unbelievable ten years without Rik Mayall. It hit me hard then and it still hurts.
2014 seems so long ago now and there's some comfort in the fact that Rik was spared all of this shit and we were spared finding out which side of the culture wars he'd end up on (though one hopes his comedy transcended that kind of nonsense). I realised that I am now older than Rik ever got to be, which also made me think about a new bit for the show where I point out that being nearly 57 is pretty old for a comedian. I can't actually think of any comedians who have lived longer than that apart from Bob Hope. Surviving cancer does not make me immortal and time is ticking away. Can I make my 10,000th blog?
A family trip to Wickes to pick up paint samples for our new house. The kids are getting to choose their own colour schemes. Ernie wanted orange with brown spots so his room looks like a cookie. This is why you don't let children choose stuff like this. Or make them stick with that choice until they are 18, so they have to kiss their first boy/girlfriend in front of that monstrosity. Though to be fair that might lead to associating sex with biscuits and who knows where that will lead?
Sex and biscuits are pretty much my major obsessions though (I told my Edinburgh flatmates in the early noughties to keep me away from biscuits and actresses), so I wonder what happened in my childhood, but thankfully I enjoy those two things separately. Only a pervert could want to sully either of these things by combining - though I've just had an idea involving a four finger Kit Kat so excuse me a moment.
The new house is currently a building site, but we popped in to see how the colours looked and Ernie had fun using the tiny rollers to make a mess and write his name on his bedroom wall and then write the word Poop. But everyone is getting excited about the move - which will hopefully be happening in August. There's a lot that needs doing first though!
Then I was back to London for my second Ball Back gig of the weekend. I was a bit worried that the low ticket sales would would make for a tricky gig. I've played the Leicester Square Theatre with all sizes of audience and it is a hard venue to play when it's around 100 or fewer, but the 140 or so that made it were very much up for it and I was much more confident about remembering what came next and it seemed to be a good one. There was at least one reviewer in, so I guess we'll find out.
