I was about to play snooker against myself when the (expected) news came through we're going back into (more or less) full lockdown, with all the home schooling nightmares that that entails. Of course, these are the kind of conditions under which self-playing snooker thrives, so I had mixed feelings. In any case the important job of working out who was best, Scotch Me or King of the World Me and Successful Me or Me2 needed to be completed. The winners would be meeting each other in the next round. Aside from Me38 (who has only played one match before - in order to qualify for this tournament) the other three players had lost in the first round of every tournament they had played in. At least one of them would continue that appalling record.
Check out youtube or your podcasts to find out who was victorious. That should take your mind off what's going on in the world.
And you have til 7th January to get 1000+ emergency questions for just 99p on ebook. That might help wile away the months til we're free again.
Obviously my heart sunk at the news we were properly locking down, even though I think it's the right decision (just a month too late). Luckily I don't have much official work to do right now, though I did want to get on with working on sketches and maybe my online sitcom. And would be nice to think of a new book idea. But at best I will now be working half days and today that was enough time to bag up all the badger prizes and record an intro for this week's podcast (which apparently I fucked up) and write half a Peter Dibdin sketch (I seem to always think I should be able to knock off three of these in a couple of hours, but it doesn't turn out that way).
After lunch I took the kids to the playground. It was freezing cold but they ran around with some friends who were also there and then we played a bit of cricket, even if all my son was really capable of was running into the wicket and laughing.
I recognise myself in him a lot and seeing him refusing to listen to anything anyone says and this morning, crying for his mum for 25 minutes when she was having a lie-in, makes me remember being three myself. Or at least fancy that I remember. And my own bloody-mindedness about why I had to do what I was told and adults' exasperation when I carried on being naughty and talking about poo and having tantrums when I couldn't be with my mum. They're more flashes of feelings than real memories, I guess, but I really feel that obstinance that my son has. And I think, like him, I made up for being a monster with lots of smiles and laughs and hugs.
I am a bit younger that him in this photo on the History page but it's terrifying how much that looks like him and how the attitude is exactly the same. I am looking at him now and he even has that little triangle gap in his fringe.
Did I just clone myself by mistake?
These kids are a marvel. I wonder if I will feel the same after another 6-12 weeks of lockdown.
