I have to start working at the British Library again; I spent about three hours playing poker on the internet today. Luckily, (for the moment) I was playing with pretend money, although maybe that should be unluckily as I quickly got $13,000 up.
Of course had we been playing with real money, people might not have been so ready to bet in such large sums. I think I'll stick to pretend on the internet (I play fortnightly at my house, but we limit the losses so that you're only likely to lose £15 a night at the most - I am slightly up), though I think there are probably enough stupid players on there for a canny professional to make a decent living out of them.
You could also fill a room with your friends and msn message each other so you know what everyone but one sucker has got. This would certainly give you an advantage and you should be able to win, knowing which cards are out on the table. I'm not sure you'd make enough to make it worthwhile, but I don't want to fall victim to it myself.
However, if I carry on wasting time dicking around on the internet I may have to become a professional gambler, as I won't be a professional writer anymore.
I must start working at the British Library again.
I wonder if you can play poker on their computers....
